NaNoWriMo 2011

Doctor Who David Tennant and Rose with TARDIS
If you’ve seen me online in the last few days, you probably saw a very constant away message – “Writing.”  What have I been writing?

Well, a novel, of course :).

After avoiding it for the last couple of years, I finally decided to take the plunge and joined up for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).  The idea is simple: write 50,000 words between November 1st and the 30th.  One month, to finalize a first draft.  It’s not about making a perfect work of art the first time around, but about (I feel) a personal challenge of discipline and endurance.  I always thought it’d be an interesting project to undertake, but when I was reminded, late Halloween night, that it was starting up again, I decided to give it a whirl.

I worked and hung out with Korkie for most of the first day, so I started a day behind.  Still, though, I started :).  I went through 2 ideas that didn’t work for me, and spent hours (and hours) distracting myself throughout the first day of writing, but I finally got through, and ended at over 1,800 for the day.  Not only that, but I like the story, and what I’ve been writing hasn’t been complete garbage.. so it’s been pretty cool :).

As for the story, it kinda came about through a number of angles coming together, but it started with a basic “what if” question: what if someone like The Doctor (from Doctor Who) was a bad guy?  No alien worlds, or sexy companions in my book.. but that was, at least, the starting point.  It’s actually been very interesting, because I dived into this endeavor with absolutely zero planning involved.  My first two false starts were based on story ideas I’ve had for quite a while, but they weren’t clicking for me.  Then, I just started writing.  I had this basic concept of time-travel, and an old picture of myself I took for a failed movie project, and that was it… I just started to write.  I have no real clue where the tale will go, from day-to-day, and that’s making things really interesting :).  I’m over 4,000 words, as of this post, and I’m aiming for about 2,000 a day.

With all of this writing-time, other things are taking a back seat.  It’s been EXTREMELY hard to focus… I’m distracting myself on a very regular basis, but I’m getting a little better with that each day.  It’s a personal challenge, for sure ;).  This coming week is finally going to see me taking more hours at work again, and it’ll only ramp up from there for the holiday season, but I’m going to be doing my best to focus on this writing as much as I can.

You can follow my progress on my profile page, if you’d really like to see what number I’m at for the day.  Hope to see you on the other side, with my sanity still intact :).
