Summer Movies 2009 Recap

Like a dingleberry, I completely forgot about this until clicking on a saved bookmark for it the other day.  It works out well, though, because I didn’t see everything I wanted to in the theaters, but in the past couple of months since I SHOULD have posted this I’ve caught up on some I missed.  These movies should all be hitting DVD soon, if they haven’t already, so there’s that benefit, too… sort of a final, grand “Behind The Counter.”

Overall, there were some surprises and some disappointments.  I’ve already written reviews on almost each movie below, so this is more to see just how on the ball I was… or wasn’t.  I won’t duplicate everything from the original post since I didn’t see every movie on it, but for the ones I did…

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Predicted interest: Nay
Actual interest: Nay

The Merry Gentleman

Predicted interest: Yea

Actual interest: Yea

Star Trek

Predicted interest: Nay

Actual interest: Nay
Explanation: Worse than I thought it might be, though.

The Brothers Bloom

Predicted interest: Nay

Actual interest: Yea
Explanation: I was on the fence, and though I was interested in seeing it, I erred on the side that it would disappoint.  I was very pleasantly surprised, however, and ended up loving it.

Management

Predicted interest: Nay

Actual interest: Yea
Explanation: Again… I was on the fence as to its potential, and though it didn’t wow me, it was better than I might have expected.

Terminator: Salvation

Predicted interest: Perhaps

Actual interest: Nay
Explanation: I was hoping for something good, even though I didn’t expect it.  I didn’t get my wish.

Up

Predicted interest: Yea

Actual interest: Yea

Away We Go

Predicted interest: Yea

Actual interest: Nay
Explanation: It was a fine movie, but not half as great as I was hoping from my friend Sam Mendes.

Moon

Predicted interest: Yea

Actual interest: Yea

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Predicted interest: Nay

Actual interest: Nay

Public Enemies

Predicted interest: Nay

Actual interest: Nay
Explanation: Gosh darn you, Michael Mann.  Gosh darn you.  I just saw this on DVD, and the opening perked me up and I thought, “This just might end up being amazing!”  The movie went on, though, and even though the shootouts were really freaking awesome, the characters were flat – and that made me so sad.  It really could have been another Heat or Collateral.

500 Days of Summer

Predicted interest: Yea

Actual interest: Yea

In the Loop

Predicted interest: Yea

Actual interest: Yea

The Ugly Truth

Predicted interest: Nay

Actual interest: Nay
Explanation: My viewing company made it fun, though.

Adam

Predicted interest: Yea

Actual interest: Yea

Funny People

Predicted interest: Yea

Actual interest: Nay
Explanation: Not that the story wasn’t what I was hoping for (though it wasn’t quite), but more that it was just really horrible in every way.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Predicted interest: Nay

Actual interest: Nay
Explanation: However, I had even more fun seeing (and mocking) this than I thought I would thanks to those I saw it with.

Julie & Julia

Predicted interest: Yea

Actual interest: Yea

Inglourious Basterds

Predicted interest: Nay

Actual interest: Yea
Explanation: The upset of the summer, if not my lifetime.  Went to see it because a friend wanted to, ended up loving it as possibly the best movie of the year.  My Dark Knight of 2009, that’s for darn sure.

The Time Traveller’s Wife

Predicted interest: Perhaps

Actual interest: Yea
Explanation: When I wrote the original list, I hadn’t even seen a trailer, so I was on the fence… but I really loved it.

So that’s that.  Of the Yea’s on my original list, I still have not seen The Hurt Locker, Paper Heart, or The Boat That Rocked which has since been retitled Pirate Radio for the American shores.  I sure saw a heck of a lot of movies this summer, though.  Some I saw alone, some with Nick, some with Korkie, and some I saw courtesy of my BFF Tex.  Hopefully, after next summer I’ll get on the recap a little bit faster ;).

yes, i think you should move to an up or down, yea or nay policy, instead of letter grades. you tend to give A’s and F’s and not much inbetween, if memory serves. letter grades also leave lots of wiggle room for wishy washyness, and that is not your style. 🙂

I prefer the letter grades, because I'm able to emphasize just how much or how little I enjoyed something. Even if I don't write a lengthy review (for whatever reason), I can give a movie an "A+" to make up for that. On top of that, there are variations of minus or plus in each letter, which I like, too.

The only letter I haven't yet used is a C… but there's always the possibility 🙂
