Writing Too Long

A writer writes – always.  At least, that’s what he tells himself ;-).

For a screenwriting class last semester my final project was the first 20 pages of a feature-length script.  I completed those 20 pages in a couple of weeks.  Since that time though, roughly four months later, I’ve only tacked on an additional 23 pages.  Something doesn’t quite add up there, does it?  I had a mighty busy summer, but now I have all of the time in the world.  Even still, it’s somewhat difficult to be creative with so much free time, however odd that sounds.  When it all comes down to it, though, there is no real excuse – I just have to do it.

In light of that, I’m giving myself a deadline, and I’m making it public because I know certain folks who will hopefully hold me to it.  I’m aiming to have my first draft done by the end of October.  I know a certain someone who has been very eager to read this first draft, and it should make a nice (and cheap) birthday present for him ;-).  I’m a big boy, so there isn’t any real punishment if I don’t succeed, but as a big boy I’ve set a goal for myself and that’s all the motivation necessary.

Here’s to hoping I make it :-).

One Response to Writing Too Long

I understand the motivation process of writing, from personal experience. I found that the class I took certainly helped me meet deadlines, but I didn't want to be in a class constantly for years. (taking it over and over) So some of the people from my writing class made a small writing group. We meet every few weeks after having emailed 10 to 12 pages of new manuscrit. When we get together, we critique each other's work. No pressure if you ddidn't send anything, but it still motivates us all to take the time to do the next section and presents really good, healthy and objective critiques. You might consider a writing group? One of us has published his first book as of a few weeks ago (self published) and myself and two others have finished our books and are starting the process of finding an agent. It really is a good process. I highly recommend it.
