I’ve Gotta Be… Young At Heart

Times have been interesting.  I left a job which I was only at for a few weeks, realizing that it’s not the place for me.  And then there was “other,” as well – which we won’t get into here.  Driving home from my last day on the job, though, a song popped into my head, and while working this Monday at Blockbuster, I started singing another song.

These are two songs I’ve loved for years, the first being one I’ve often called a personal anthem, but I haven’t heard them in a while, so I found it hilarious that they both sprung up from my memory.  Each one fits in a very special way, so let’s pay attention to the lyrics, shall we?

Sammy Davis Jr. – “I’ve Gotta Be Me”
This one has been a biggie for many years.  I used to imagine it as some great call to Hollywood, but revisiting it now gives it a much more personal meaning.  The last line of the emphasized lyrics below was what originally popped into my head as I drove away from the wrong job path… but it works in every other way.

Whether I’m right or whether I’m wrong
Whether I find a place in this world or never belong

I gotta be me, I’ve gotta be me

What else can I be but what I amI want to live, not merely survive

And I won’t give up this dream

Of life that keeps me alive

I gotta be me, I gotta be meThe dream that I see makes me what I am

That far-away prize, a world of success

Is waiting for me if I heed the call

I won’t settle down, won’t settle for less

As long as there’s a chance that I can have it all

I’ll go it alone, that’s how it must be

I can’t be right for somebody else

If I’m not right for me

I gotta be free, I’ve gotta be free

Daring to try, to do it or die

I’ve gotta be me

Frank Sinatra – “Young At Heart”
This one, though less passionate and full of fight, is the key to it all.  I watch people miss this on a daily basis so pay attention, folks.

Fairy tales can come true, it can happen to you
If you’re young at heart
For its hard, you will find, to be narrow of mind
If you’re young at heart

You can go to extremes with impossible schemes
You can laugh when your dreams fall apart at the seams
And life gets more exciting with each passing day
And love is either in your heart or on its way

Dont you know that its worth every treasure on earth
To be young at heart
For as rich as you are its much better by far
To be young at heart

And if you should survive to 105
Look at all you’ll derive out of being alive
Then here is the best part
You have a head start
If you are among the very young at heart

So, as I’m remembering that I’ve gotta be me, I wanted to remind you all to be young at heart… and perhaps we can meet somewhere in the middle.
