Releases for 4.14.09

Today’s entry is barely even worth it.  The Reader came out today, but I didn’t see it.  I may rent movies that I think will be bad, just to give them a fair shot, but it isn’t that I’m just slightly disinterested in seeing The Reader, it’s that I made it a point to not rent it.  The subject matter and plot points make it a story I never want to see, and if I so strongly dislike the story – why bother?

The ones to see:
None this week.

The ones to avoid:
The Spirit

The Spirit
Well, this is a pretty universally panned movie… and I can’t disagree, but my reasons are a little different.  I’ll be honest, I didn’t even watch the whole thing.  I skipped through to the end, just for the heck of it, but I can safely say that if you’re not interested within the first 5 minutes – that’s not going to change if you watch the whole thing.  The Spirit is silly and over the top, but it was done on purpose, folks.  I have heard reviews mocking the overzealous and campy performance, but I think everyone missed the point.  That’s how it was intended to be.  I realized this very quickly and it reminded me IMMEDIATELY of a Sam Raimi movie.  Visually this is in the same vein as Sin City, but while that movie took itself seriously, The Spirit doesn’t at all.  Yes, there are some good-looking women in it, and if that’s enough to get you to watch a movie… enjoy, but for me there was zero entertainment value here.  I’m not a fan of this type of campy, Raimi-esque movie, but at least I dislike The Spirit for the right reasons :-).  The Spirit = Sam Raimi + 1/2 Sin City + Batman: The Movie (the 1960’s version).  Do with that calculation what you will ;-).
